Joint injection CPT Codes are not covered when you inject a material that is considered experimental and investigational. if the patient's specific health plan has a policy, check both their medical policy and reimbursement policy websites. Also, consider having your staff call with the specific biological you plan to inject to determine if they cover it. Be careful on thinking it is automatically it is covered because an injection CPT code like 20600 or 20605 is generally a covered service. You have to remember, it has to be paired with a J code usually detailing what was injected. Just attending a webinar or a colleague saying yes, it is covered to bill orthobiologics, it is never a reason to start billing something that is new and/or controversial. Do your due diligence like starting in a forum like you did here with experts. By no means stop with this Q&A though! Confirm! Confirm! Confirm! Medicare has come out with them being not covered and has been clawing back payments they made several years ago, buyer beware!
